A NEW RECORD FOR THE MILK FROG Trachycephalus coriaceus (ANURA: HYLIDAE) FROM TELES PIRES RIVER, SOUTH AMAZONIA, BRAZIL Acta biol.Colomb.
FERREIRA,Vanessa Gonçalves; THALER,Rafaela; FOLLY,Henrique; DA SILVA,Leandro Alves.
ABSTRACT Herein, we report a new record of the milk frog Trachycephalus coriaceus for the Brazilian southern Amazonia and provide an updated geographic distribution map. We collected one specimen of T. coriaceus on 8 november 2016, during a nocturnal survey inside a dense ombrophilous forest in the right bank of the Teles Pires River, municipality ofJacareacanga, southern of Pará State. The record of T. coriaceus to Jacareacanga is the first to the State. The disjoint geographic distribution of this species along de Amazonia may just reflect the paucity of amphibian knowledge throughout this biome and the difficulty to detect this species in the field, given its explosive reproductive behavior.

A simplified table for staging embryos of the pipid frog Pipa arrabali Anais da ABC (AABC)
ARAÚJO,OLÍVIA G.S.; HADDAD,CÉLIO F.B.; SILVA,HÉLIO R. DA; PUGENER,LOURDES A..
ABSTRACT Pipa is a Neotropical genus of frogs that dwell in freshwater environments. It includes four species that lack free-swimming larvae (P. aspera, P. arrabali, P. pipa, and P. snethlageae) and three with tadpoles (P. carvalhoi, P. myersi, and P. parva). Developmental tables such as the one proposed by Nieuwkoop and Faber might be useful for Pipa species with tadpoles. However, for the other Pipa species, to determine stages by this table or by any of the tables already prepared for frogs without tadpoles (e.g., Crinia nimbus, Eleutherodactylus coqui, and Oreobates barituensis) is impossible. By using embryonic, juvenile, and subadult specimens, we generated a staging table for P. arrabali, from the moment limb buds were first observed until birth,...

A Temnospondyl amphibian from the Rio do Rasto Formation, Upper Permian of southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
DIAS,ELISEU V.; BARBERENA,MARIO C..
A partially preserved lower jaw constitutes the holotype of Bageherpeton longignathus n. g., n. sp., a probable archegosaurid amphibian, which is here assigned to the Platyoposaurinae. The material was collected in the beds of the Rio do Rasto Formation outcropping in Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. This is the second archegosaurid described for the Permian of Brazil. Prionosuchus plummeri Price 1948, from the Pedra do Fogo Formation in the Parnaiba Basin (northeastern Brazil), is the first. The new taxon differs from other platyoposaurs by the presence of an extremely elongated precoronoid that participates in the mandibular symphysis.

Advertisement call and female sexual cycle in Uruguayan populations of Physalaemus henselii (Anura, Leiuperidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Maneyro,Raúl; Núñez,Diego; Borteiro,Claudio; Tedros,Marcelo; Kolenc,Francisco.
Physalaemus henselii (Peters, 1872) is a little known leiuperid frog that has not been studied since the 1960’s. Herein, we redescribe its advertisement call, and assess the female sexual cycle and the reproductive period on the basis of the macroscopic analysis of the ovaries and field observations. The Ovarian Size Factor (OSF) was calculated. The study was made in Departamento de Rivera, northern Uruguay. The advertisement call consists of short (177 ± 21ms), multipulsed (20 ± 3 pulses/note) notes, with a note repetition rate of 1.57 ± 0.13 notes/s. Physalaemus henselii has a female sexual cycle with unimodal distribution of gravid females, which are present from February to September. The OSF and the ratio "females with mature oocytes / females without...

Advertisement call of Dendropsophus microps (Anura: Hylidae) from two populations from southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Forti,Lucas Rodriguez; Márquez,Rafael; Bertoluci,Jaime.
In anurans, acoustic communication is a major mechanism of pre-zygotic isolation, since it carries information about species recognition. Detailed descriptions of the acoustic properties of anuran advertisement calls provide important data to taxonomist and to the understanding of the evolution of the group. Herein we re-describe the advertisement call of the hylid frog Dendropsophus microps (Peters, 1872) after analyzing a larger sample than that of previous descriptions. We also compare the acoustic properties of the call in two populations and discuss the effect of the presence of the sister species, Dendropsophus giesleri (Mertens, 1950), a potential competitor, in one of the populations. Additionally, we provide information on calling sites and size...

Alimentação e variação sazonal na freqüência de capturas de anuros em duas localidades do Brasil central Zoologia
Moreira,Glória; Barreto,Larissa.
The feeding ecology and the sazonal variation in capture frequencies of anurans in two localities of Central Brazil was studied. The anuran capture frequencies were analysed counting specimen numbers collected in pitfall traps during the dry and rainy seasons. Anurans were caught more frequently during the rainy season. The diet of adults Proceratophrys sp., Eleutherodactylus sp., Bufo paracnemis Lutz, 1925, and Physalaemus cuvieri Fitzinger, 1826 were studied through the analysis of individual stomach contents. Results showed that the type of diet varied among the species studied.

Amphibians and reptiles from a highly diverse area of the Caatinga domain: composition and conservation implications Biota Neotropica
Loebmann,Daniel; Haddad,Célio Fernando Baptista.
We surveyed the herpetofauna from the Complex of Planalto da Ibiapaba (CPI), CE, Brazil, during two years, using five sampling methods and information available in the literature. The amphibians are represented by 38 species distributed into nine families. The reptiles found summed 84 species, distributed into 25 families. Most amphibians collected exhibited wide occurrence along CPI, where we recorded 24 species (63.2%), which occurred at least in 60% of the sampled environments. Reptiles showed a different pattern, since 52 species (62.6%) had a restricted distribution (up to two environments). Sixteen species out of 25 considered as rare in CPI are restricted to relict moist forests. We also applied a rarity-vulnerability index to determine the most...

Roberto,Igor Joventino; Ribeiro,Samuel Cardozo; Loebmann,Daniel.
The state of Piauí is located between the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes in Northeastern Brazil, having a rich heterogeneity of habitats. However, publications regarding the amphibians of this state are scarce. We compiled literature data and complemented it with amphibian inventories in some municipalities of Piauí and present a list of 55 species (54 anurans and one caecilian). Ten of them are endemic to the Cerrado biome (Rhinella veredas, R. cerradensis, R. mirandaribeiroi, R. rubescens, Dendropsophus rubicundulus, Phyllomeduza azurea, Leptodactylus pustulatus, Eupemphix nattereri, Physalaemus centralis, and Proceratophrys goyana) and two endemic to the Caatinga (Rhinella jimi and Ceratophrys joazeirensis). We also present data about species richness of...

Annotated checklist of the herpetofauna of Petit Saut, Sinnamary River, French Guiana Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Avila-Pires, T.C.S..
The Mission Radeau des Cimes to Petit Saut, French Guiana, offered the opportunity to study the herpetofauna of the canopy of the tropical rainforest, an area hardly studied sofar. Two localities at heights of 30 and 35 m could be studied, whereas data on a third site were obtained through information from other participants. The herpetological results of the research in the canopy were meagre. Only the frog Hyla leucophyllata (Beireis) and the lizard Mabuya bistriata (Spix) were observed in the canopy. Additionally the terrestrial herpetofauna was studied extensively and turned out to contain some species that had not been reported before from French Guiana. Also, for many species new distribution data within French Guiana were obtained. Le Mission Radeau...

Anurans of a riparian forest in Sao Carlos, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sabbag,Ariadne Fares; Zina,Juliana.
We surveyed anuran amphibians in a riparian forest fragment of the Córrego do Espraiado, located at the Universidade Federal de São Carlos, Municipality of São Carlos, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. During March 2009 and February 2010 we did weekly surveys in which we recorded 13 anuran species. The species showed a seasonal reproductive activity. In addition, we found a positive correlation between the number of reproductively active species and photoperiod. We also found that the studied community was more similar to those of transitional areas between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado than those of the nearby Cerrado fragments.

Anurans of a threatened savanna area in western Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sugai,José Luiz Massao Moreira; Terra,Juliana de Souza; Ferreira,Vanda Lúcia.
The Upper Paraguay River Basin is located in the center of South America and harbors one of the largest wetland in the world, known as Pantanal. This floodplain is surrounded by uplands, which presently have most of their area converted into pastures or monocultures, besides being poorly known scientifically. Also, most of these upland areas are considered conservation priorities. Here we present a list of anuran species from a savanna-like area (municipality of Camapuã, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) inserted in the uplands surrounding the Pantanal floodplain, in the Upper Taquari River sub-basin, and evaluate the effectiveness of the sampling effort. Data were obtained through active searches in 22 plots in aquatic habitats, during the rainy season...

Anurans of the Parque Estadual do Mirador, a remnant of Cerrado in the state of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Andrade,Etielle Barroso de; Weber,Luiz Norberto; Leite,José Roberto de Souza Almeida.
Abstract The Cerrado is one of the most threatened biomes in Brazil. It is estimated that much of its original vegetation has been replaced by some type of human use. This is quite worrying, mainly in the northern part where the number of wildlife inventories is insufficient and creates the false impression of low diversity in the region. The Parque Estadual do Mirador-PEM, located in the south-central region of the state of Maranhão, presents vegetation typical of the Cerrado biome and corresponds to one of 46 priority areas for conservation in the state. Herein, we describe the species richness and composition of the anurofauna from the PEM and analyze the influence of different types of vegetation in its formation. Our inventory was conducted from...

Anurans of the sandy coastal plains of the Lagamar Paulista, state of São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Zina,Juliana; Prado,Cynthia Peralta de Almeida; Brasileiro,Cinthia Aguirre; Haddad,Célio Fernando Baptista.
Insular habitats are considered ideal for biogeographic studies, as they represent almost closed habitats with known formation timelines. Although São Paulo state in Brazil has a large number of continental and oceanic islands, few studies have examined the composition of the fauna in each locality. These studies are crucial to determine the community structure and to make biogeographic and phylogenetic inferences. From February 2007 to January 2009, we surveyed the anuran community of sandy coastal plains in four municipalities of the Lagamar Paulista: Cananéia, Ilha Comprida, Iguape and Pariquera-Açu, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. This region is located in the Cananéia-Iguape estuary complex, comprising three continental islands: Ilha de Cananéia,...
